2007 REVIEWSSeptember 29th 2007 Senior FootballThe Starlights made it through to the county football final with a tough two point win over Bunclody at the weekend. The team was struggling with injuries which makes the win even better. we meet Clongeen in the final who overcame Killanerin. We had many heroes on the day none better than Brian Murphy finally getting his chance to prove what a dedicated and hard working player he is. Jason Russell and Declan Skippy Ruth were commanding and capable under pressure, John Boots Hudson was his usual accurate self and Lee Murphy was calm cool and collected in his debut in the Senior goal. And a special mention for Ronan Furlong who flew back from Spain for the game - Ronie is and has always been one of our greatest Clubmen. And Maurice Donohoe who traveled back from Cavan to line out with the Starlights. Thanks Ronie and Maurice as long as we can count on men like ye it will always be worthwhile. It was a team effort and well done to all and what can I say its so good to be `back in the final again`. It is a boost not just for the club but for the entire town and we will be hoping that everyone will get behind us and turn out in numbers for the final. September 15th 2007 Senior Hurling The senior hurlers couldn't match the footballers progress and lost the quarter final to a humming Oulart unit at the weekend. The final scoreline of 2-18 to 1-9 relfected OUlart's dominance. Like Wexford our status has gone from being one of the senior contenders to being one of the teams on the bottom rung. We need to work with our young talent and build up a new team of challengers to the title. September 8th 2007 Senior Football The senior footballers have made the semi-final with a 3-10 to 0-10 victory over St Annes An excellent second half performance secured a semi final spot for the Starlights in Wexford Park on Saturday evening. Amid brilliant September sunshine and after a lack luster first period the Stars shone in the second and beat the Annes comprehensively 3-10 to 10 points at the final whistle. It took a while for us to get into the game and at the break we went in 2 points down – 5 points to 7. But when the dynamic three up front Gary Brilly and the Hudson brothers put it together there was no stopping them – it was poetry in motion as they took their scores with panache and style putting the Annes out of the 2007 Football Championship. John Hudson 2-5 Willie Hudson 4 points Gary Brilly 1 goal and Cillian Lett 1 point. Well done to our backs who held out well under severe pressure from a strong St. Annes side and to the middle of the field – particularly Jason Russell for the marvelous high fielding and determination. Lets go forward with spirit to next weeks encounter with Oulart/The Ballagh and make it a double slot in this years Semis. September 1st 2007 Senior Hurling Our Senior hurlers progress to the knockout stages of the Championship after beating a strong and determined Oylegate side in Wexford Park on Saturday evening. In what was a hard fought battle the Rapps came off in the end with a 3 point margin 1-15 to 1-12. After only scoring 5 points in the opening encounter we went in at the break 4 points down but pulled our socks up a bit in the second period and came to grips with the game scoring 1-10 to Oylegates 1-2 and carving a spot for ourselves in the next stage of the Championship. Now if only we could score 1-10 in each half!!! September 1st 2007 U12 Football Well done to our U/12 footballers who secured a place in the Co. Final beating Naomh Eanna in extra time in Oylegate on Saturday afternoon. Well done lads now we hope that ye will go on to do the double! August 31st 2007 Jun B Hurling Our Junior B hurlers despite their best efforts were unable to record a win against Marshalstown in Farmleigh on Friday evening last. In what was a highly competitive and entertaining game we went in at the half time whistle with the sides level at 10points to 2-4 and looked to be evenly matched in the first stage of a three way play off to contest the District final. However, in the second half our fitness levels or lack thereof told on us and we faded and allowed Marshalstown to finish the game 2-11 to 1-11 with some very fine displays from Pa Fuzzy Casey and Joe Hyland in the middle – Fuzzy getting 5 points in all other scores coming from Joe Cullen 1-1, Barry Baz Nolan 3 points and D.J. Oshea and Brian Kehoe 1 point each. August 30th 2007 Jun B Ladies Football Our Junior B ladies footballers gave a good account of themselves on Thursday evening in Bellefield beating the Shamrocks 2-15 to 1-6. Well done girls. July 20th 2007 Jun B Ladies Football Our Junior B team put up a great display on Friday evening against Crossabeg/Ballymurn in Bellefield amid dreadful weather conditions. Despite losing 2-3 to 2-5 our ladies played a blinder and the game could have gone either way against strong opposition who have been playing a lot longer than we have. Great hope there for our ladies for the future. Our thanks to Johnny Mythen and Joe Murphy and Sean and Sarah Russell for all their work with these girls. July 14th 2007 U21 Football Our U/21 footballers were in action on Monday last in Bellefield against once again the Martins and we would have fancied our chances against them but following a disasterous first half were we conceeded 3 easy goals we were always chasing the game. The half time score was 3-3 to 4 points and it was going to be an uphill battle all the way through the second period and despite gallant efforts by Ricky Fox and Tommy (Tucker)Foley and Cathal Murphy when he was moved from the full forward position it was a battle that we were never going to win. The final tally of 9 points to 4-8 put paid to any dreams we may have had at U/21 this season. The good news is that many of our current U/21s are still U/21 next year - or perhaps that is just grasping at straws. June 10th 2007 Junior B Hurling Our Junior B hurlers fared out a lot worse against a strong and experienced Tara Rocks side that were so much better and so much fitter. Having held them to a one point lead at halftime 1-4 to 8 points - we ran out of steam in the second half and the Rocks punished us accordingly scoring 1-14 to our 1-2 to make the final tally 2-6 to 1-23. A humiliating defeat for a team who had won all their matches in the League to date but we always knew that Tara Rocks were going to be a problem. On a positive note P.J. Byrne made some very fine saves and it was good to see John Ryan and Evan O`Rourke making the step up from Minor and accquiting themselves well. June 10th 2007 Senior Hurling Our Senior Hurlers were unlucky to lose to Cloughbawn in a game that was hotly contested and could have gone either way right to the final whistle. Cloughbawn piped us by the narrowest of margins 2-13 to 18 points. June 7th 2007 U12 Hurling Our U/12 hurlers had a marvellous win over the St. Martins in Piercestown on Thursday last winning 4-15 to 1-3. Well done lads trojan work is being done with these youngsters and it is definitely paying off. Keep up the good work and the winning ways lads. June 5th 2007 Junior Football league Starlights 1-17 – Ferns 0-5 Our Junior footballers took on Ferns in Bellefield in the League on Tuesday evening last and had a comprehensive victory beating them 1-17 to 5 points. This is four our of four for this side in the League and should see them qualify for the closing stages. Well done to all concerned. June 4th 2007 Junior B Camogie On Monday 4th June our Camogie Junior B team played Buffers Alley and beat them 1-14 to 1-5. Another good win for these girls. June 2nd 2007 Senior Football league Starlights 1-10 – Sarsfields 1-5 It took the lads a while to get into the swing of things but our first score came after 12 minutes with a lovely point from John Hudson. The skillful John continued to dominate and score 3 points in the first half along with one from Cillian Lett and Gary Brilly to leave the score at the halftime whistle 5 points to 2 from the Sarsfields. The second period was no different with John notching up another 4 and Davy (Speedy) Morrissey hitting the back of the net with a well taken kick and putting another one over the bar. The final tally was Starlights 1-10 – Sarsfields 1-5. June 2nd 2007 U12 Ladies Football Starlights 3-3 – Naomh Eanna 1-5 Our U/12 Ladies Footballers had a marvellous win on Saturday afternoon in Garden City defeating the home side Gorey by 3-3 to 1-5. This was a wonderful result for our girls being their first victory and it just goes to show that the training and the coaching is all paying off – so full compliments to our mentors Sinead Kehoe/Jane Mythen and Willie Nolan who are doing great work with these youngsters and great tribute to the girls themselves who stuck to the task well and got the result. Scorers were Aisling Byrne who got the opening point Christine and Rachel Breen and Helena Doyle who got the three goals in the second half with Rachel adding on another 2 points to her personal tally and all our backs playing extremely well keeping Goreys score to a minimum. May 28th 2007 U16 Camogie Rapparees V HWH Bunclody Sadly our U/16 Camogie team lost the County Final to Bunclody in Coolree last night. Despite a trojan effort from the girls with our defence giving outstanding performances we were unfortunately unable to capitalise upfront. But our girls can take heart in their very spirited display in what was a keenly contested game that came right down to the wire. Well done to all involved - it is always an achievement to reach a county final and perform well. There is a lot of promise in these girls and I have no doubt that they will go from strength to strength and pick up several county medals. May 27th 2007 Junior Hurling Rapparees 2-10 V Faythe Harriers 5-22 Unfortunately, it was another bad beating for the Rapparees second string in the Junior A Championship in Taghmon on Saturday evening losing out to the Faythe Harriers 5-22 to 2-10. We were seriously under strength and while hurling reasonably well in the opening half we were completely out hurled in the second period. May 20th 2007 Senior Hurling Rapparees 0-7 Oulart/The Ballagh 2-18 In what can only be described as a disastrous week for Senior Hurling in the club the Rapparees were beaten by Oulart in the first round of the Championship 1-17 to 7 points. For various reasons - mainly injury - we were down about six of our regular squad and had to field with many of our young contenders - we have great hopes for many of these young players but it was expecting a lot of them making their debut in the Senior hurling Championship to play against one of the strongest teams in the county. Our two stalwarts one up front and one sweeping everthing behind - Adrian Fenlon and Declan (Skippy) Ruth hurled well but the task was daunting. All we can do is regroup and prepare for the next stage of the Senior Hurling Championship. May 18th 2007 Ladies Football Starlights 1-9 Cushinstown 1-1 Speaking of very real challenges our Ladies Football Junior B team really put it up to Cushinstown in a very windy Bellefield on Friday evening last beating them 1-9 to 1-1 and full marks to our defence who didnt allow Cushinstown to get a score in the entire second half. Well done Ladies ye are excelling yourselves and getting better and better with every game. May 18th 2007 U12 Football Starlights 3-12 St Martins 1-8 Our U/12 footballers had a very good win on Friday evening as well at Bellefield beating St. Martins 3-12 to 1-8. May 12th 2007 Junior Football Starlights 0-4 Blackwater 1-16 Our Junior footballers the only adult team in action this week suffered a major defeat in the first round of the Championship at the hands of Blackwater in Monamolin on Saturday evening last.It was always going to be an uphill struggle against last year's County finalists but with only 16 available on the day and many of them aged between 17 and 20 years we were physically weaker and less experienced than the opposition and were at a disadvantage from the onset but when we lost two players one to injury and one who received his walking papers it was obvious what the outcome would be. Many thanks to all those who turned out on the day and to Padraig Doyle, Physio for stepping into the breach when Rory Newe went down with an ankle injury. This was a dreadful result for a team that is to date unbeaten in the League and very disheartening for those young players who did show. Some very serious questions will have to be addressed here before the next round. May 12th 2007 U16 Camogie Rapparees 1-4 St James 1-3 Our U/16 Camogie team recorded a marvellous win in a wet and windy Glynn on Sunday evening beating the home side by 1 point to gain their place in the County Final. Well done to all the girls and their mentors. Team:Jessica Martin, Claire Murphy, Kate Cullen, Jemma Murphy, Gillian Murphy, Ashley Leacy 0-3 (frees), Katie Butler, Nicola Davitt, Stephanie Farnan, Megan O'Shea, Rachel Breen, Aishling Byrne, Katie Collins 1-0, Siobhan O'Connor, Leanne Hore 0-1, Ciara Foley (Injured), Hazel Denton (Injured). April 24th 2007 Senior Hurling Rapparees 2-12 Oylegate/Glenbrien 1-7 Team:Brian Carley; Jake, Liam Boland, Deccie Barron; Ed Tobin, Adrian Fenlon, Tom Wall; Eoin Quigley, Fran O'Gorman; Ollie O'Connor, Garrett Kavanagh, Mark Mythen; Ricky Fox, Mark Gahan, Richard Murphy. Cathal Murphy for Mark Mythen. April 22nd 2007 Junior B Hurling Rapparees 4-12 Naomh Eanna 2-13 Our Junior B hurlers excelled themselves at Bellefield on Sunday afternoon putting up a large score against the Gorey side Naomh Eanna. Rapparees won 4-12 to 2-13 in what was a much more evenly balanced game that could have gone either way with both teams hurling well and striking the target regularly. Good to see Brian Kehoe back in action again and doing well scoring 1-3 from the corner forward position. My thanks to all the lads who showed up particularly those who had played Junior A the previous day and those who had supported the cancer fundraiser the previous night. April 21st 2007 Junior A Hurling Rapparees 5-17 Clongeen 1-3 Our Junior A hurlers gave a fine performance on Saturday evening beating Clongeen 5-17 to 1-3 in what was never really a serious challenge. From the onset the Rapps were the stronger and more eager side with all of our players hurling well, our forwards taking some excellent scores from good delivery from our backs who were getting in good and well placed clearances and the work combination of Cathal Murphy and Ed Tobin in mid field. Another good result from this grade in the League and once again well done to all involved. April 15th 2007 U16 Football HWH Bunclody 1-8 Starlights 3-8 The Juvenile footballers did well to beat Bunclody on Sunday morning 3-8 to 1-8. Excellent result lads and well deserved. April 14th 2007 Senior Football Clongeen 2-7 Starlights 1-8 Our Senior fooballers played Clongeen on Saturday evening last in Clongeen and seemed in control of things almost to the final whistle. At full time it was Starlights 1-8, Clongeen 1-6 and it looked as though all we had to do was hold on to the lead. However, after 2 minutes of injury time Clongeen notched up two more scores with no reply and the final tally was Stars 1-8 Clongeen 2-7. April 14th/15th 2007 U14 Hurling Slaney Hurling Festival Our U/14 hurlers accquited themselves well in the Slaney Hurling Competition in Rathnure on Saturday losing out to the Shelmaliers in the semi –final. A good effort lads keep up the work and the results will come. April 12th 2007 U12 Hurling Glynn/Barntown 0-3 Rapparees 7-13 Our U/12 hurlers recorded a win away to Glynn/Barntown on Thursday evening last beating them 7-13 to 3 points and the same team did very well on Saturday in a tournament in Ballygunner in Waterford beating 3 teams on their way to the Final – O` Donavan Rossa/Tramore and Ballyhale Shamrocks only to be beaten by the narrowest of margins in the Final by Ballygunner themselves. A marvellous run lads and well done to all concerned. April 10th 2007 U12 Ladies Football The first ever U/12 Starlights ladies football team took the field against Blackwater on Tuesday evening last in Blackwater and put up a great show for their very first match ever. Although we didnt record the win we managed to score 1-2 against a side with a lot more match practice with a lot of our young players showing that they are well able to kick football. Well done to Willie Nolan/Aisling Kehoe and Mairead Dwyer who are putting these girls through their paces every Saturday morning at 11am in Bellefield. April 7th 2007 Senior Hurling Rapparees 0-10 Buffers Alley 0-10 Our Senior hurlers who were next up at Bellefield didn’t fare out as well going down to a stronger and more determined Buffers Alley side 2-12 to 10pts. Scorers: Ricky Fox 4 pts, Tomas Mahon 2 pts, Mark Mythen/Ollie O`Connor/Fran O`Gorman and Declan Ruth 1 pt each. April 7th 2007 Junior B Hurling Rapparees 2-12 Ballyhogue 1-8 Our Junior B Hurlers were the next team to record a victory on Sunday evening in Bellefield as they saw off the challenge from Ballyhogue convincingly 2-12 to 1-8.The Rapps got off to a good start notching up a score of 1-8 in the first period against 4 points it looked to be plain sailing from there on. However, the changes made at half time didn’t work especially the moving of Tommy Foley out of the half back line up to corner forward and the loss of Cathal Murphy in the middle of the field allowed Ballyhogue to get right back in there and they had 1-2 scored before we rectified our mistake. But once we did so everything changed again and within minutes we were back on top and in command from then until the end of the game. Michael Nolan and Graham Doyle fought constantly and strong in around the square Michael coming away with 2pts and Graham getting a goal and a point. Once again Tommy Foley had an excellent game at wing back as did Cathal Muprphy and Wayne Breen round the middle, Barry Nolan trying hard at corner forward and a special mention for Paul Byrne who volunteered himself for the goal and played excellently there. Scorers: Ger Foley 1-3, Graham Doyle 1-2, Michael Nolan 3pts, Tommy Foley 2pts, Maurice Donohoe and Wayne Breen 1 pt each. April 7th 2007 Junior A Hurling Our Lady's Island 1-8 Rapparees 2-16 Full marks to this panel of players and their mentors on another good overall performance with all our young guns firing on all cylinders and our older veterans providing the stability and confidence. Kevin Courtney had a good game at half back ably assisted by John Barron and the remarkably skillful Tommy Tucker Foley. Peter O` Sullivan and Cathal Murphy were the midfield combination and they got a tally of 4 points between them with 3 of them coming from Cathal from well out the field. Good to have Niall Sunderland back in the fullback position – very little passes Niall and anything that does doesnt do so easily – a lethal weapon along with cousins Joe Carley and Fiacre Ryan a staunch line of defence. Up front all the forwards performed well with full forward Ronie Furlong getting 2 good goals – well there is no such thing as a bad one and Ollie O`Connor and Damian Barron picking off some nice points and with Araon Ronan clever and brave in the goal it was a 15 man performance well should I say 20 man one as Declan Ivers replaced Joe Carley, Joe Newe came on for Wayne Breen, Karl Cullen for Tony Boland Rory Newe for Fiacre Ryan. April 1st 2007 Senior Football Adamstown 1-6 Starlights 1-8 Our Senior Footballers played Adamstown on Saturday at 4.30pm in Adamstown. It might be remiss of me to call this team our Senior Football team because due to injuries, let downs and soccer we had to field almost a Junior team to fulfill this fixture. And fair play to all those who showed for us they did remarkably well to beat Adamstown 1-8 to 1-6 with every player on the field putting in 110%. Full marks to Cathal Murphy who when called upon to lineout in goal he did so despite having no experience in the position and accquitted himself well only letting one past him and it was one that even a more experienced goalkeeper wouldnt have been able to do anything about. Liam Boland did well at fullback as did Brian Murphy at centre back ably assisted by James Buckley and Tom Wall on the wings – middle of the field combination of Mark Gahan and John Daly commaded the area well while up front there was some good scoring from Gary Brilly who got the goal , Davy Morrissey, Mark Quigley and Ollie O`Connor. Team: Cathal Murphy, Fiacre Ryan, Liam Boland, Joe Newe, James Buckley, Brian Murphy, Tom Wall, Mark Gahan, John Daly, Mark Quigley, Gary Brilly, Davy Morrissey, Rory O`Connor, Ronan Furlong, Ollie O`Connor. Subs: Joe Carley for Fiacre Ryan. April 1st 2007 U14 Camogie Rapparees 10-2 Marshalstown 1-0 The U14 Camogie team beat Marshalstown yesterday evening. Rapps 10-2 Marshalstown 1-0 The girls put up a great display after being beaten by Bunclody the previous week. Leanne Hore and Rachel Breen were outstanding in midfield, Kate Cullen cleaned up in the backs along with Gillian Murphy and Sarah Collins. The forwards were on fire, those being Hazel Denton, Asihling Byrne, Orlagh Doyle, Susan Lynch and Ciara Foley. Jessica Martin, Samantha Cloke, Kate Cullen, Helena Doyle, Gillian Murphy, Sarah Collins, Shannon Dagg, Leanne Hore0-2, Rachel Breen, Ciara Foley, Katie Lynch, Orlagh Doyle 1-0, Aishling Byrne 3-0, Hazel Denton6-0, Susan Lynch. Subs: Amy Quigley for Katie Lynch, Amy Quigley for Samantha Cloke. March 28th 2007 Ladies Football Starlights 9-11 Shamrocks 0-0 The Starlights or Starlets as they are being referred to recorded their first ever win in Ladies Football on Wednesday evening last beating the Shamrocks 9-11 to no score. It was a wonderful win on this historic occasion and one that we hope augurs well for the future of this growing sport in the club. The Mentors Padge Courtney, Sean Russell and Sarah Russell were delighted with the way their charges acquitted themselves even though they have only been training for 2 weeks these girls are already showing great promise and look to be enjoying the game immensely. The Starlights were in command of the game from start to finish and the outcome was never in doubt with our girls kicking some marvellous football throughout. There were some really outstanding individual performances but overall everyone gave 100% and it was great to see girls who have never played for the club before making their debuts like Ciara Doran playing at half back, Nina Hoffman who came on in the forwards, Roisin Codd doing well in the half back line, Tracy Russell who replaced Sarah Robinson in the goal, AnnMarie Dwyer who scored a lovely point and Kim Walker who looked as though she`d been playing football all her life. Of course our camogie stalwarts showed that they are every bit as versatile as their male counterparts in the club with some really fine displays from Jane Mythen, Emma Murray, Leah Gethings, and Niamh Buckley in the backs and some really fine scoring up front by Aisling Kehoe, Nicola Davitt, Angela Russell and our skillfull nippy corner forward Stephanie Farnan notching up a total of 4-1. Theres an old Irish saying that goes ` Tosach maith leath na h-obre` which in English means a good beginning is half the work – well if thats true the Starlights are well on their way in Ladies Football. Keep it up girls and well done. Team: Sarah Robinson, Leah Gethings, Jane Mythen, Niamh Buckely, Roisin Codd, Emma Murray, Ciara Doran, Louise O`Brien, AnnMarie Dwyer, Angela Russell, Aisling Kehoe, Louise Hore, Roisin Butler, Nicola Davitt, Stephanie Farnan, Scorers Stephanie Farnan 4-1, Aisling Kehoe 2-2, Angela Russell 1-1, Nicola Davitt 5pts, Kim Walker 1-1, Roisin Butler 1gl and AnnMarie Dwyer 1pt. March 25th 2007 U16 Hurling Our Juvenile hurlers were beaten at Bellefield on Sunday morning by a bigger and stronger St. Annes team. March 24th 2007 Junior A Hurling Rapparees 2-12 Gusserane 0-12 In glorious sunshine our Junior A hurlers took on Gusserane in their first League outing at 3pm on Saturday afternoon in Bellefield and acquitted themselves well to make it 3 out of 3 for our hurlers after the first round of the All County League. With our U/21s enjoying a weekend away in Cork it was always going to be difficult to field this second squad without them but fair play to Tomas McVeigh and Larry Byrne mentors with the team they not only fielded but notched up the 2 points for the win as well. Some of our more experienced players did very well on the day including Captain Ollie O`Connor, Maurice Donohoe, Tony Boland and Mark Quigley and it was good to see some of our Junior B`s stepping up a rung and being equal to the task like Wayne Breen, Graham Doyle, John Tyrrell and Michael Nolan. Liam Boland was commanding at centre back ably assisted by Joe Carley and Patrick Quigley and Tony Boland showed himself to be deadly accurate when be began taking the frees in the second half and with the scores level at the halftime whistle 1-8 to 5 points Tony accuracy contributed greatly to the final outcome. Ollie O`Connor got a rasper of a goal in the first half and his overall performance was an example to the rest of his colleagues. Tonan Furlong who replaced Graham Doyle scored our second goal with Richard Murphy making a lot of play at centre forward and Davy Morrissey pushing forward from the middle of the field and unlucky for several chances in the first 20 minutes of the game. Team: John Tyrrell, Joe Carley, Liam Boland, Patrick Quigley, Wayne Breen, John Murphy, Daithi Mernagh, Mark Quigley, Davy Morrissey, Tony Boland, Richard Murphy, Maurice Donohoe, Graham Doyle, Ollie O`Connor, Michael Nolan. Subs: Ronan Furlong for Graham Doyle Scorers: T. Boland - 7pts, Ronan Furlong and Ollie O`Connor 1 goal each, Richard Murphy 2pts, Mark Quigley, Graham Doyle and Davy Morrissey 1 pt each.> March 24th 2007 Junior B Camogie Rapparees 2-9 Ferns 0-3 Our Junior B’s got off to a great start with a win over Ferns. Rapps 2-9 V Ferns 0-3. The girls started off with great determination and finished the same, a very enjoyable game of camogie to watch, some very classy and skillful players on both teams. We just found a goalkeeper who was in hiding for quite a few years in Sarah Russell, what a game she had, absolutely outstanding – where has she been? Jane Mythen dominated the back line, along with Lisa Hore who hasn’t played for years, what a game she had, never lost it, great to see her back and Roisin Butler and Chrissie Murphy who have just stepped up from the underage, both perfomed very well. Charlene Murphy and Louise O’Brien worked hard in midfield and Charlene pulled off some fantastic scores. Aideen Doyle performed well in the forwards along with Aishling Kehoe, Nicola Davitt and Nina Hofmann from Germany who has never played before or held a hurley stick .Overall a good solid performance by all involved. Sarah Russell, Eva Morrissey, Sarah Carley, Lisa Hore, Leah Gethings, Jane Mythen, Chrissie Murphy, Charlene Murphy 1-7, Louise O’Brien 1-0, Nicola Davitt 0-1, Roisin Butler, Aideen Doyle, Niamh Buckley, Nina Hofmann, Aishling Kehoe 0-1 March 22nd 2007 U16 Camogie HWH Bunclody 3-2 Rapparees 0-2 We were away to Bunclody on Thursday night 22nd at 7.30. This was a first for all of the girls to play under lights, it was as if it was the middle of the day, unfortunately we didn’t get the result we wanted. We once again started the better team but as time passed we seemed to sit back and let Bunclody take charge of the game and that is exactly what happened. Jessica Martin who’s our goalkeeper for U14’s and U16’s played a stormer of a game, in the first half she made two of the most fantastic saves anyone has ever seen (fitzy would even have been proud of them) and again in the second half she threw herself from one end of the goal to the other, she’s certainly one to be watched. Megan O’Shea had a great first half but unfortunately had to be substituted at half time due to illness, she was replaced by Gillian Murphy who was outstanding. She is sister to Jemma who plays in the full back position and is solid and consistent in every game. We were unlucky in the first half not to have scored a goal, we had plenty of opportunity to do so. Kate Cullen was another one who dug deep in the second half and cleared the lines, as well as Ashley Leacy and Katie Butler. Leanne Hore had an outstanding performance throughout the game and in the end had to go off due to a hand injury. A lot to be learned from this game I reckon! Jessica Martin, Susan Lynch, Jemma Murphy, Kate Cullen, Claire Murphy, Ashley Leacy, Katie Butler, Leanne Hore, Nicola Davitt, Ciara Foley, Stephanie Farnan, Megan O’Shea, Katie Collins, Hazel Denton, Siobhan O’Connor Subs: Gillian Murphy for Megan O’Shea March 19th 2007 Intermediate Camogie Oulart 3-1 Rapparees 3-3 This game was away to Oulart on Monday morning at 11am, quite a cold morning but plenty of sunshine. We started off the better team, but went through a few phases of sitting back and letting the opposition get back into the game. We had the wind in the first half which was a help. Sarah Nolan was picked as captain for the forthcoming season and no-one can dispute that fact that she deserves it. Louise Hore was outstanding on the day, playing wing back and covering in the full back line at times when needed. Aishling Kehoe made her debut as full forward and scored 2-1, she played in the backs up to now. Nicola Davitt U16’s gave a solid performance and Stephanie Farnan another. Louise O’Brien made her debut for the Rapparees in midfield and gave a solid display. Overall a solid first match performance, a great start for the girls at this level but a long way to go yet. And if Bellefield was wild and windy it didn’t even compare to Piercestown where there wasn’t an ounce of shelter. Our Juniors notched up 1-14 in the first half to the Martin 1-2 but playing against a gale in the second half we were not sure if it was going to be sufficient but once again the Rapps showed great determination and harried and battled for everything they got with the backs putting in excellent performances to keep the Martins to a score of 1-4. . Lovely to see Pa Gordon lining out for us again in the corner back position where he showed that the old form is still there and as good as ever. Good efforts too from some of our very young guns Barry Nolan and Tommy and Ger Foley. Scorers - Ger Foley 5pts, Michael Nolan 5pts, Lee Murphy 1-1, Graham Doyle 2pts, D.J. O`Shea 3 pts, Wayne Breen and Tommy Foley a point each. John Tyrrell, John Foley, Fiacra Ryan, Pa Gordon, Joe Carley, Eric Flynn, Tommy Foley, Wayne Breen, Oisin Carley, Graham Doyle, Ger Foley, D.J.O`Shea, Barry Nolan, Michael Nolan, Lee Murphy. Sub: Pa O`Brien for Barry Nolan. March 18th 2007 Senior Hurling League Rapparees 1-18 Shelmaliers 1-5 On a wild and windy Bank Holiday Monday our Seniors beat the Shelmaliers 1-18 to 1-5 in Bellefield in an encounter where the Rapps looked on top throughout. The halftime score was 7pts to 4pts to the Rapps who had battled well against a ferocious wind in the first period. An early goal from the Shels almost from the throw in to begin the second half indicated that they meant business but in fairness our lads stuck to the task well and recorded some excellent scores to finish strong at 1-18. A good result for their first encouter in the League with good performances from Liam Boland, Tom Wall, Deci Barron, Fran, Ollie O`Connor, Fran O`Gorman, Mark Mythen and Ricky Fox. Indeed very much a team effort with the entire 15 giving it their best. Team: Brian Carley, John Murphy, Liam Boland, Declan Barron; Adrian Fenlon, Declan Ruth, Tom Wall; Ollie O'Connor, Fran O'Gorman; Davy Morrissey, Mark Quigley, Eoin Quigley; Richard Murphy, Mark Mythen, Ricky Fox. March 16th 2007 U16 Camogie Rapparees 1-2 Oylegate 0-0 This was the first match of the season and a good game by all standards, this team was mainly made up of U14’s, not a bad day weather wise for the match besides the cold. Nicola Davitt gave her usual 100% hence the reason she is on the county panel as well as Leanne Hore (U14 County Panel,Stephanie Farnan (U16 County Panel). Ashley Leacy was solid in the centre back position and Jemma Murphy gave her usual solid performance in the full back position and what can I say about Jessica Martin in the goal – who is U14, she’s definitely one for the future and not forgetting Katie Butler who from start to finish goes at a 100 miles an hour or so it seems. Jessica Martin,Claire Murphy, Jemma Murphy,Susan Lynch, Katie Butler, Ashley Leacy,Kate Cullen, Nicola Davitt 0-1, Leanne Hore, Stephanie Farnan0-1, Ciara Foley, Megan O’Shea, Hazel Denton 1-0, Katie Collins, Siobhan O’Connor,Subs: Gillian Murphy for Susan Lynch, Amy Quigley March 3rd 2007 Senior Football League Starlights 0-5 Gusserane 1-12 Not a great result for the Starlights in their first outing. It has to be said that the Stars missed a plethora of scores in the opening half - despite creating the chances they were not able to convert - indicative of the fact that we have only commenced training in the past two weeks. No doubt our shooting will improve as the weeks go on. The halftime score was Stars 2 points coming from Gary Brilly and Davy Morrissey to Gusseranes 5 points - but a Gusserane goal early in the second half after the Stars has squandered several shots on target put paid to any hope of salvaging the points from this encounter. Only scoring 3 points in the second period from Willie Hudson, Tom Wall and Gary Brilly we were never in contention and Gusserane looked the sharper throughout. Loathe though I am to make excuses but Starlights were without 7 of their best players on the day so hopefully when all are back fighting fit we will get a more entertaining performance. Team: 1. George O`Connor, Pa Murphy, Liam Boland, Brian Murphy, Tom Wall, Adrian Fenlon, Mark Mythen, John Daly, Mark Quigley, Davy Morrissey, Sean Kenny, Willie Hudson, Maurice Donohoe, Gary Brilly, Ollie O`Connor. Scorers: Gary Brilly 2 pts, Willie Hudson 1 pt, Tom Wall 1 pt, Davy Morrissey 1pt.
