Starlights 0-13 Sarsfields 1-11 (AET)
This match was a bit like our hurling semi-final against Blackwater except in reverse.
We were dominant throughout the match without ever hitting anything like top gear and it was the inability to move up the gears that left us short of scores in the final third of the pitch. With valiant displays by our backs against a strong wind leaving us trailing by only the narrowest of margins at the half time whistle - in a low scoring first period -it looked as though it could go the Starlights way in the second period. We were three points up as the final whistle loomed when we conceded a goal to bring the match to extra time. As so often happens in these circumstances, the team that is happier to achieve extra time run out the eventual winners. It is fair to say that it was good to get the extra games we got as a result of there being a B Championship - they have further improved some of our younger players like Joe Cullen/Ricky Fox/Cathal Murphy/Tommy Foley/Paul Byrne - at their age its all about matches! So even though our Senior Football 2009 didnt end on a high note - it gives us hope for the future and next years campaign. Team: Lee Murphy, Tom Wall, Mark Gahan, David Morrissey, Cathal Murphy, Shay Deegan, Mark Quigley, Jason Russell (0-1), James Carty, Tomas Mahon (0-3), Eamonn Furlong, Daithi O'Brien (0-1), Ricky Fox (0-1), John Hudson, Tommy Foley (0-5, 0-4 frees). Subs: Joe Cullen for Shay Deegan, Pa Doyle (0-1) for Eamonn Furlong, Rory O'Connor for Daithi O'Brien, Paul Byrne for Jason Russell (inj).
