  Starlights 1-11  St Annes 1-12

Our Senior Footballers left the Championship behind them in Oylegate on Sunday last going down to St. Annes in the second round of the competition having been beaten by Gusserane in the first.

Despite kicking against a strong wind the Starlights had a good first half with full backline of Tom Wall/Davy Morrissey and Cathal Murphy defending well and some excellent scores coming from Willie Hudson 1-3 – the goal coming from a penalty and 3 additional points from John Hudson, Eamonn Furlong and Tommy Foley – making it 1-6 to 6 points at the break.

We resumed well with John Hudson getting the first point of the second period and about 12 minutes into the half looked comfortable with a 4 point lead however our middle section seemed to fall asunder at that point and we began to lose the breaking ball resulting in the Annes going forward and taking their scores to finish the game 1.12 to 1.11.

One would have to say a disappointing exit when at stages in the first half we were kicking well and looking good but we just seemed to run out of steam and couldn’t produce a strong finish when it was needed.
