The highlight of the Club this week was without doubt Lá na gClub – it almost made up for our defeat in the Feile Peil Final on Saturday in Wexford Park and good luck to Fethard in their quest for All Ireland glory. A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who helped make Lá na gClub a huge success again this year – our emphasis was on Family and fun and I think I can safely say that all those who turned up had tremendous fun both the young and the old.
The afternoon began with the Official Opening by club chairman John Browne and Coiste na Nog Chairman Pat Tobin who welcomed all to Bellefield and thanked them all for coming. Our new Club Information leaflet containing all details of club personnel and team managers and phone numbers was launched with one for everyone in the audience and then it was `Let the games begin`. It was lovely to see kids enjoy the age old simple events like the 3 legged race or the spud and spoon race – indeed some of our adults and older members relived their youth at these events and the Wellie Throwing Competition was another popular contest as were the pony and trap rides provided courtesy of Patrick Murphy and the hurl the ball through the hole competition drew many, many would be winners. It would be fair to say that all were winners on the day with everyone joining in the fun and frolics but none more so than the Chaps versus Dads game – with the age of the fathers full back line almost equivalent to the entire age of the Chaps team – Ed Doran/Fiacre Ryan and Tomas McVeigh lined up in front of a very lively Michael Collins in goal. It was a hot and heavy game with both sides determined to win but in the end experience won the day and the young guns may wait for another occasions for revenge! The tea tent was busy the entire afternoon with teas/coffees/biscuits and an array of sandwiches provided by club members and might I take this opportunity to thank all those who turned up on the day with plates of sandwiches – it was greatly appreciated. We had a shop in full swing and Pamper Hamper raffles – Guess the name of the Teddy competition – a stick in the sand Treasure Hunt – and U/8, U/10 and U/12 boys and girls matches and can I thank all the ladies who helped with shop/draws/teas and coffees and the day finished in a fitting manner with all retiring to the clubhouse and enjoying a sing-a-long with Tony McClean/Purt Doyle and Jim Breen. All in all a day to remember with all going home tired but happy! Once again my most sincere thanks to all who made this possible and to all who attended on the day it is important for us to come together like this every so often and rekindle the spirit of the what the gaa is all about – family, club, being together and having fun.
