Under 16 Football

Gorey 16th May 2004

Tara Rocks 3-13    Starlights  0-08

Don’t let the score fool you most of it was run up in the dying minutes of the game.  Starlights tried their hearts out all through the game and were in the lead 0-07 to 0-04 at half time.

They were playing against the hill in the second half and found the going much tougher, Ronan Doyle and Andrew Yates had been in charge of mid-field but when they tired we seemed to lose our way.  We got a penalty when six points down and about ten minutes to go but Karl Cullen’s well struck ball rebounded off the crossbar and was worked down field for a point, we never recovered this setback.

We are now out of this campaign and can only look back and wonder if we could have maintained some consistency where we might have ended up.  Full marks to the lads to-day for trying and we will be back at this grade.

Bellefield 9th May 2004

Starlights  0-05   Duffry Rovers  0-09

Starlights continue to self destruct at this grade and put in another disappointing performance against Duffry Rovers.  The Duffry had no points coming into this match and Starlights had every chance of qualifying for the Semi-Finals, but it all came unstuck for the Stars as they settled into another game of giving the ball away.

We managed no score in the first half and could only muster five points in the second never managing to get on top in any area of the field.  Daithi Mernagh, Colin Cooper and Aidan Doyle tried hard but our forwards did not get enough quality ball to work with.  We now have only a mathematical chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Bunclody 2nd May 2004

Starlights  2-12  Bunclody 1-6

Starlights traveled to Bunclody for this encounter on Sunday, the weather was great and  the pitch perfect but the appointed referee failed to show.  The game got under way with a Bunclody mentor in charge and the Starlights duly knocked over the first score, Bunclody soon replied and the game continued in this vein for the first half.

Andrew Yates took a knock shortly before half time and John James Dunne was called into the centre forward position , he fisted home an insurance goal late in the second half.  Ciarain O’Connor had scored our first major.

Jonathan Jordan gave some indication of what he is capable of , Daithi Mernagh is finding his form,  Aidan Doyle and Colin Cooper were solid in defence.  Bunclody gave us a tougher game than we expected but there can be no chances taken with Duffry Rovers on next Sunday.

Pa Doyle, Pa Higgins, Colin Cooper, John Higgins, Pa Quigley, Aidan Doyle, Rory Newe, Andrew Yates, Ronan Doyle, Jonathan Jordan, Ciarain O’Connor, Karl Cullen,

Daithi Mernagh, Pa O’Rourke and Tommy Foley.

Bellefield     25th April 2004                  11.30am

Starlights 1-07   V   Shelmaliers 2-10

Starlights turned out in the new Tomas Kinsella Craft Butcher jerseys for the first time to-day but were unable to get a win on their inaugural outing.  The Stars started the better and showed great promise early on but started to lose the midfield battle and conceded free after free in the besieged back line, Shels capitalised on these frees and led the Stars by 5 points at half time.

The Shels did not relent in the second half and soon had stretched their lead to nine points, there was a late goal from the Stars but it was too little too late and the pressure is now on to qualify from this group.

Aidan Doyle and Colin Cooper tried to stem the Shels tide, Karl Cullen was their best assistant and Ciarain O’Connor finished the game well but overall this was a disappointing display.

Sunday 18/04/2004 V Adamstown

Starlights 2-08    Adamstown 2-06

Starlights continue to make life difficult for themselves at this grade, although starting better than their opponents they soon reverted to giving the ball away cheaply and it was only an opportunist Pa O’Rourke goal that kept them in touch at half time Adamstown 2-04 Stars 1-02.

Oisin Carley took the game to Adamstown in the second half knocking over two and netting one, the backs tightened up with Karl Cullen once again standing out.  This game went down to the wire with points from Tommy Foley and Jonathan Jordan proving to be the difference.  Aidan Doyle was his usual solid self and Ronan Doyle covered a lot a ground in midfield while Declan Barron tried hard in the unfamiliar fullback position.

Pa Doyle, Pa Higgins, Declan Barron, Rory Newe, Karl Cullen, Aidan Doyle, Patrick Quigley, Andrew Yates 0-01, Ronan Doyle 0-01, Daithi Mernagh, Oisin Carley 1-02, Jonathan Jordan 0-02, Pa O’Rourke1-00,  Ciarain O’Connor 0-01, Thos (Tucker) Foley 0-01.

Sunday   11/04/2004

Taghmon 2-06              Starlights 4-05

Taghmon was the venue and the bus left in plenty of time for the delayed 12pm throw in.  The Stars  lined out without the injured Dec Barron, Ger Foley, Jonathan Jordan (Unavailable), Colin Cooper (Unavailable) and Ricky Fox (Unavailable).

Noel Whelan refereed and the Stars were under pressure from the first whistle.  A number of changes were made to try and shore up midfield and it was poor shooting by Taghmon  that saw them leading by just four points at half time.

The second half continued in the same mode with Karl Cullen and Oisin Carley the only players that seemed to be holding their own.  It looked like curtains for the Townies with five minutes to go but the team suddenly came to life with Aidan Doyle moving to Fullback and Karl Cullen moving to the forwards.

Pa O’Rourke kicked one goal and Andrew Yates knocked on a ball for Karl Cullen to fist home, there was no time for Taghmon to recover from these and the Starlights were the victors.

Next match at home to Adamstown 11.30 Sunday.

Pa Doyle, Pa Higgins, Rory Newe, John Higgins, Karl Cullen 1-00, Aidan Doyle, Pa Quigley, Andrew Yates 0-01, Ronan Doyle 0-01, Pa O Rourke 2-01,Oisin Carley, Daithi Mernagh 0-01, Tommy Foley, Ciarain O’Connor1-01, Darren Cullen.  Subs:  David (Biscuits) Murphy for Darren Cullen in the Second half.

Under 16 Footballers traveled to Pairc Charmain to Play the Sarsfields.  It was the first outing of the year and the Starlights were down by 12 points before starting to play.  Fullback Colin Cooper arrived late and seemed to steady the ship and there was some good second half displays from Andrew Yates, Aidan Doyle, Rory Newe and Pat Higgins with Pa (Gooch) O’Rourke taking some nice scores up front.   Starlights lost by three points but it was an encouraging second half.
