Jim Byrne Cup
HWH/Bunclody 5-11 Starlights 2-5
Bunclody 5 December 2004
We were beaten in the Jim Byrne Cup on Sunday the 5th but were not too put out as it was our first run out in the competition this year. As usual we just about managed to get a team on the field. The pitch in Bunclody was immaculate but it was a combination of first touch and the greasy ball that caught us out. A number of players went well on the day Mick Fortune was solid in defence ( and should stay there!) Kevin Courtney, Cathal Murphy and Oisin Carley all tried hard while Pa O'Rourke and Tommy (Tucker) Foley (3 Pts) were the best up front.
Next weeks game should be at home and we need our players turning up, we can go a lot further here with a bit of effort.
Horeswood 21 June 2004
Fr Grennans 1-09 Starlights 2-08
We traveled to Cushinstown for this match only to find out we should have gone on to Horeswood, so the Match started a little later than advertised. It was the proverbial game of two halves, the Starlights having the wind and the hill in the first period. They put it to good use playing some lovely football and knocking up 2-07 to Fr Grennans 1-04 and Brian Newe was very unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty. Things changed after the break with the home team taking over and winning the lions share of the ball but shooting a lot of wides. They scored five points to our single score and our luck seemed to be out when Fr Grennans were awarded a penalty with time up and just two points in the difference. The experts shouted go to your left but Pa Doyle went low to his right and got a full hand to the ball to steer it round the post, the resultant 45 was dropped in and the referee ended the game.
We now qualify for a Semi-final against one of the top two finishers from division 1B.
Pa Doyle, Fiacre Ryan, James Newe, Ml Fortune, Ronan Doyle, Stephen Murphy, Ed Tobin, John Tyrell, Fran OGorman, Rory OConnor 0-03, Tony Mackey 0-01, Brian Newe 1-02, Ciarain OConnor 0-01, Sean OBrien 1-00, Eoin Quigley 0-01.
Subs John Daly (for Murphy), Kevin Walsh (for Tobin), Aidan Doyle ( for Mackey), Cathal Murphy (for OBrien), Terry Kavanagh, Pa O Brien and Rory Newe.
Referee Jack Stafford.
Minor Football Wednesday 07/07/2004
Starlights 2-11 Clongeen 1-04
This was the first outing for many of the players and was a first chance for the selectors to get some idea of talent they might have. Clongeen played down the hill with the wind in their backs for the first half and played some lovely football but were unable to finish.
Our lads stayed with them and somehow went in at half time all square at 1-04 a piece. Players started to get the pace of the game in the second half and used the wind to good advantage knocking up a score of 2-11 with Clongeen unable to increase their first half tally. A good run out overall for the team but lots of work to be done if we are to progress.
Shane Breen, James Newe, Fiacre Ryan, Ed Tobin, Killian Lett, Fran OGorman, John Tyrell, Eoin Quigley (Yes !), Tony Mackey, Lee Murphy, Brian Newe, Ricky Fox, Rory O Connor, Kelnm Morrissey.
Subs: Cathal Murphy, Ronan Lambe, Terry Kavanagh, Ciarain O Connor, Kevin Mythen, Pa O Brien, Mark Kenny, Emmett Kenny, Stephen Murphy, Sean OBrien.
Mentors : Johnny Russell, Paddy Murphy, Brian Murphy and Tom Morrissey

Minor Football - 21 March
A depleted minor football team were well beaten by Ferns in the quarter final of the league. Having to field without a number of regulars had a big impact on the boys but fair play to those who turned out, particularly the juveniles for whom this was a big task.
Minor Football - Sunday 14th March
The minor footballers were unlucky in a windswept league game against Bunclody in Bellefield on Sunday 14th March. They made a storming comeback in the second half but just ran out of time to lose by 2 points. The performance was a big improvement on the previous week's outing against Naomh Eanna and bodes well for the championship.
